GoPro as a Travel Camera – WHY?

GoPro Vs Regular Cameras . . .

Compact and Lightweight

The GoPro Hero 4 is small enough to sit in the palm of your hand and is light enough that it can be clipped on to pretty much anything makes it an incredible piece of kit. Any skydiving video online will be filmed using at least 1 GoPro if not 2, 3 or even 4.

The GoPro Hero 4 weigh’s as little as 5oz meaning you don’t have to worry about your baggage limits or if its going to be bulky, you can put it in your pocket and away you go.

Ease of use

What I love about the GoPro is its ease of use, pass it over to anyone and ask them to take a photo of you and 9 times out of 10 its comes out a cracker. Now with the GoPro Hero4’s LCD screen it makes this process even easier. The LCD screen not only allows you to see what you are shooting but also gives the opportunity the review and delete photos if required to save space.

I am glad to see that GoPro didn’t put all their eggs in 1 basket with the LCD screen as they have made the camera fully functional if using the LCD isn’t possible. This is extremely important for scuba diving or any quick function changes you need to make on the go.

Its uses are endless….

The absolute winner for me is its ability to be used for any situation. With it durable design and its wide angle lens you can throw it into any situation and the footage comes out on top!

Its waterproof to 40m so take it Scuba Diving, Surfing, Water Skiing or even SHARK CAGE DIVING and you will get some footage that will be in your memories for life.

I have used mine for a whole bunch of situations; Swimming with Whale Sharks in Thailand, Hot Air Ballooning in China, Mustering Cattle in the Outback of Australia, Bungy Jumping in Africa, White Water Rafting in New Zealand, Diving with Manta Rays in Indonesia and of course hundreds of #SELFIES along the way!

Should you buy a GoPro Hero 4?

The answer is YES, I wouldn’t travel without mine now. If I lost it today I would send myself skint to buy another tomorrow! Its an unbelievable peace of equipment that partners well with any smartphone so you don’t even need a computer to use it!

I fully understand it comes with quite a price tag so maybe if you can sacrifice the LCD screen the maybe buy yourself a GoPro Hero 3+ as the image quality is almost identical.

Below I have broken down the GoPro options to help you decide which is best for you:

I won’t be covering every GoPro that has ever existed but I will cover GoPro Camera’s that I would go out and purchase myself.

GoPro Hero 3+

Originally I was going to talk about the ‘GoPro Hero’ but the specs are not even worth talking about so I decided to pass. But….the GoPro Hero 3+ is a great option if you are on a budget. This budget option packs the punch required for awesome footage with 10MP photos and 1080p 60fps video. You can also buy a detachable LCD screen if you can’t afford the upgrade to the Hero 4.

GoPro Hero 4 Silver Edition

I purchased the Hero 4 Silver originally because I was on a budget which later turned out to be the best option for me. I wanted the option to have the LCD screen and once I have purchased it I later found out that the Black 4k edition did not have a built in LCD as standard. The GoPro Hero 4 Silver comes standard with LCD display, it has 12MP photos and 1080p 60fps video plus 720p 120fps option also meaning if super slow-mo floats your boat then this is the camera for you!

GoPro Hero 4 Black Edition

This camera is at the top end of the GoPro products, it is designed for the professional creatives. It has the ability to shoot 4k cinema quality video, it also shoots 12MP photo BUT….it doesn’t come with a built-in LCD display. You can purchase it separately if required. If 4k isn’t crucial then save yourself the cash and buy the GoPro Hero 4 Silver!
